Austrian superstar Benni Raich has announced his career end at a press conference in Vienna today. The winner of 4 Olympic and 10 World Championship medals as well as 36 World Cup races named a lack of motivation as a main reason for his retirement.
„It was no easy decision. I have lived through a lot and have been very successful. But it is a good point in time now to make this decision and take another step forward. Above all, I had the feeling that the last motivation to explode in the races, to give everything and to have this last bit of tension was missing. This is the main reason why I chose to end my career and enter my ski-retirement.“
ÖSV president Peter Schröcksnadel was sad to see a big name go: „I am very sorry that you chose to end your career but the time comes at some point. You are right, you are healthy and it’s the most important thing to finish with your health intact. The Austrian Ski Federation is proud of you, as a ski racer and a human being. For the future, we wish you all the best.“
In terms of his plans for the future, Raich was not fully set yet but was definitely considering a future within the sport: „I am looking forward to what will come now and I am sure that the future will bring something positive. I have to grow into my new role as a husband and father now but I will still be passionate about skiing. Maybe I’ll find one or the other task within the sport for me.“
